Where to stay in Sigiriya

How to choose the right area to base yourself in Sigiriya, then search live availability and prices on Booking.com.

Choosing a base

In short: base yourself in Sigiriya village to be first up the rock; head to Pidurangala for a calmer, view-filled and often cheaper stay; choose Dambulla if you're travelling on a budget or by bus and train; and pick Habarana for connections and the Minneriya and Kaudulla safaris.

Sigiriya sits at the heart of the Cultural Triangle, the cluster of ancient cities and rock temples in Sri Lanka's dry central plains, and most travellers use it as a base for the Lion Rock, the Dambulla caves and the elephant-gathering safaris nearby. Where you stay is a trade-off between proximity and price: Sigiriya village puts you closest to the rock; Pidurangala just north is quieter and more offbeat; Dambulla is the budget, public-transport hub; and Habarana is the well-connected junction town and safari springboard.

Scattered stays at the foot of the rock

Being closest to the Lion Rock

The scattered village at the foot of Sigiriya Rock, ranged along quiet lanes among paddy, scrub jungle and a growing crop of boutique hotels and eco-lodges. It is the most convenient base for beating the crowds and the heat to the summit, and for sunrise on neighbouring Pidurangala, and holds some of the area's finest design-led stays, though dining is mostly in the hotels and prices run higher than the towns nearby.

Dambulla

Workaday junction town by the caves

Budget & public transport

The busy market and junction town about twenty minutes south-west of Sigiriya, strung along the main highway beneath its UNESCO-listed golden cave temple. It is the practical, best-value base, well served by buses, near the railway and handy for the caves and the wholesale produce market, though it is a functional roadside town rather than a scenic one, and you'll travel out to Sigiriya each morning.

Crossroads village and safari springboard

Connections & safaris

The small crossroads village north of Sigiriya, at the meeting of the roads to Trincomalee, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, and the usual springboard for jeep safaris to Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks and their dry-season elephant gatherings. It is the best-connected base, with a cluster of larger resort hotels and lodges, though it is a village rather than a town, so you'll drive out to Sigiriya and the sights.

Good questions

Where to stay in Sigiriya: FAQ

Where is the best place to stay for Sigiriya Rock?

Sigiriya village, at the foot of the rock, is closest and lets you reach the summit early to beat the crowds and the midday heat. It has the finest boutique lodges too, though prices run higher and dining is mostly in the hotels. Pidurangala just north is a quieter, cheaper alternative with great views.

Should I stay in Sigiriya or Dambulla?

Stay in Sigiriya to be closest to the Lion Rock and the boutique lodges; choose Dambulla if you're on a budget or arriving by bus or train, as it's the region's cheapest and best-connected town, with the cave temple on the spot. Dambulla is around twenty minutes from Sigiriya Rock.

Where should I base myself for the elephant safaris?

Habarana is the usual springboard for the jeep safaris to Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks, where hundreds of elephants gather in the dry season. It has a cluster of resort hotels and sits closest to the park gates, though it's a quiet crossroads village otherwise.

Is Pidurangala a good place to stay?

Yes, if you want a calmer, more offbeat and often cheaper stay with some of the best views of the Lion Rock itself. It's laid-back and less crowded than Sigiriya village, with the popular Pidurangala sunrise hike on the doorstep, but it has fewer restaurants and services, and you'll tuk-tuk to Sigiriya's entrance.

How many nights do you need in Sigiriya?

Two nights is ideal, enough to climb the Lion Rock, see the Dambulla caves, watch a Pidurangala sunrise and fit an elephant safari or a day trip to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. One night covers the rock and caves at a rush; three lets you add Anuradhapura.
